This paper deals with solving the system of equations arising from a centered second-order finite difference discretization of the linearized convection-diffusion equation with a structured grid. A semi-circulant preconditioner is defined. Analytical formulas for the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the preconditioned system of equations are derived. The results show that for mesh Péclet numbers less than 2, the rate of convergence depends only on the mesh Péclet number and the direction of the convective fields.
