The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a gas comprising a quantum mechanical system with two energy levels is investigated using the Maxwell-Bloch equations. This involves considering the behavior of a generally nonlinear second-order system of differential equations describing the dielectric polarization and density of the gas, coupled with Maxwell's equations which describe the electromagnetic field. The purpose of the study is to establish that the polarization field decays as the time \(t\to\infty\).
