    For \(r>1\), \textit{T. Downarowicz} and \textit{A. Maass} [Invent. Math. 176, No. 3, 617--636 (2009; Zbl 1185.37100)] showed for a \(C^r\) interval map \(f\) that its symbolic extension entropy is bounded above by \(\frac{r}{r-1 }\log \| f' \| _\infty\). For any \(r \geq 2\) and \(\epsilon > 0\), the paper reviewed here constructs a \(C^r\) interval map \(f\) with its symbolic extension entropy bounded below by \(\frac{r}{r-1 }\log \| f' \| _\infty - \epsilon\). To construct the example the author accumulates horseshoes on smaller and smaller scales similar to the construction by \textit{J. Buzzi} [Isr. J. Math. 100, 125--161 (1997; Zbl 0889.28009)]. Related examples were constructed by \textit{T. Downarowicz} and \textit{S. Newhouse} [Invent. Math. 160, No.~3, 453--499 (2005; Zbl 1067.37018)] for diffeomorphisms in higher dimensions.
