Motivated by some recent works on the wave equation with a time-varying delay in the boundary condition, the author considers the following viscoelastic wave equation with a delay term in internal feedback: \[ \begin{cases} |u_t|^\rho u_{tt}-\Delta u-\Delta u_{tt} +\int_0^t g(t-s)\Delta u(s)\,ds \\ \qquad+\mu_1u_t(x,t)+\mu_2u_t(x,t-\tau)=0, &\text{in}\;\Omega\times (0,\infty),\\ u_t(x,t-\tau)=f_0(x,t-\tau), \quad &x\in \Omega,\;t\in (0,\tau),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\quad u_t(x,0)=u_x(x), & x\in \Omega,\\ u(x,t)=0, & x\in\partial \Omega,\;t\geq 0, \end{cases} \] where \(\rho>0\), \(\Omega\) is a bounded smooth domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\), \(N\geq 1\). Under appropriate conditions on \(\mu_1,\mu_2\) and on the kernel \(g\), the author obtains the local existence result, and establish the decay result. These results generalize previous result by \textit{M. Kirane} and \textit{B. Said-Houari} [Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 62, No. 6, 1065--1082 (2011; Zbl 1242.35163)] from \(\rho=0\) to \(\rho>0\).
