Cyclotomic Temperley-Lieb algebras are introduced and studied, as a generalization of ordinary Temperley-Lieb algebras, similar to cyclotomic (or Ariki-Koike) Hecke algebras generalizing Hecke algebras of symmetric groups. The cyclotomic Temperley-Lieb algebras are first defined by generators and relations. Then a calculus of labelled diagrams is developed, which provides an equivalent definition and which realizes these algebras as subalgebras of \textit{R. Häring-Oldenburg}'s cyclotomic Brauer algebras (see [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 161, No. 1-2, 113-144 (2001; Zbl 1062.20004)]). Then it is shown that cyclotomic Temperley-Lieb algebras are cellular and indeed iterated inflations of certain Abelian groups; this should be compared to ordinary Brauer algebras being iterated inflations of various symmetric groups (see [\textit{S. König, C.-C. Xi}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No. 4, 1489-1505 (2001; Zbl 0996.16009)]). Over a splitting field, a parametrization of the simple modules is obtained, their number depending on the values of the defining parameters. Dimensions of cell modules are computed and a characterization is given, in terms of the characteristic of the underlying field and of the values of the defining parameters, for the cyclotomic Temperley-Lieb algebra to be quasi-hereditary. Finally, a branching rule is worked out for cell modules and the determinants of the Gram matrices of bilinear forms on cell modules are computed.
