The matrix method as a technique of dimensional analysis removes extraneous information from a functional relationship describing a phenomenon using n pertinent variables and reduces it into a new functional relationship with n-m non-dimensional parameters, where m is the total number of fundamental dimensions occurring in that n total number of physical quantities. The basis of the matrix method and its implementation is illustrated with the body accelerating in a fluid and with the simulation of the release of a life-boat from an offshore platform onto the water. The essence reveals, when a parent matrix is transformed to a second matrix, the fundamental dimensions L, M, T of a mechanical system are replaced by the dimensions of quantities which appear more pertinent to that particular phenomenon. The matrix method reveals itself as a systematic and compact technique, requiring fewer steps than other methods, the approach being highly suitable for computer implementation.
