Given an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra it is in general difficult to decide whether it possesses a faithful unitary highest weight representation. The author studies this question for the class of split locally finite Lie algebras. He essentially classifies all locally finite algebras with an involution and a compatible root decomposition which admit a faithful unitary highest weight representation. The focus lies on the algebraic structure of these Lie algebras, such as the Levi decomposition and the structure of the almost reductive and locally nilpotent part. The paper is divided into four sections: The structure of split involutive locally finite Lie algebras, Necessary conditions for unitary highest weight representations, Construction of a faithful unitary highest weight module, and Lie algebras with many unitary highest weight modules.
