Fast solution techniques for boundary element equations utilizing non-overlapping domain decomposition methods. Parallel algorithms for solving large scale Galerkin equations in plane bounded domains with piecewise homogeneous material properties are studied. A spectral equivalence analysis of the boundary element Schur complement is given. This yields a tool for constructing appropriate preconditioners. Numerical results are obtained on a massively parallel machine using 128 processors. Applications to elasticity problems and to the coupling of these methods with finite elements are presented.
