The author treats the problem of extending a higher derivation d in the sense of Hasse and F. K. Schmidt of a field K of positive characteristic to a derivation \(d'\) of an algebraic extension L/K. In the case of an iterative derivation of finite rank he characterizes algebraic field extensions that are maximal with respect to the property that \(d'\) is also iterative and has the same index. If L has finite exponent over K such a derivation can be extended uniquely to L iff L/K is separable. In the case of a higher derivation of infinite rank he shows that there exists the largest subfield of the algebraic closure of K, containing K, to which d can be extended. Finally non-integrable elements are considered (an element \(z\in K\) is called non-integrable of order i iff \(z\not\in d_ i(K))\). He shows that for an iterative higher derivation of finite rank with an extension \(d'\) of the same index every non- integrable element of arbitrary order of K stays non-integrable in L.
