Suppose that \({\mathcal P}=({\mathcal P}_0,\dots,{\mathcal P}_n,\dots,{\mathcal P}_\infty)\) is a postprojective partition of an Artin algebra \(\Lambda\), that is, it is a preprojective partition of \(\Lambda\) in the sense of \textit{M. Auslander} and \textit{S. O. Smalø} [J. Algebra 66, No. 1, 61-122 (1980; Zbl 0477.16013)]. It is known that if \(\Lambda\) is connected and hereditary then the connected component \(\Gamma_{\mathcal P}\) of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of \(\Lambda\) formed by modules in \(\bigcup_{n\in\mathbb{N}_0}{\mathcal P}_n\) is a postprojective component, that is, \(\Gamma_{\mathcal P}\) has no oriented cycles and each module in \(\Gamma_{\mathcal P}\) belongs to the \(\tau\)-orbit of a projective module. The main objective of the paper is to give other sufficient conditions for the component \(\Gamma_{\mathcal P}\) to be postprojective. In order to do this the authors consider classes \({\mathcal H}_n\), \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), of algebras introduced by the second author [Commun. Algebra 18, No. 5, 1401-1423 (1990; Zbl 0707.16005)]. The class \({\mathcal H}_1\) plays a special role. An algebra \(\Lambda\) belongs to this class if and only if it is not hereditary and the class \({\mathcal P}_0\cup{\mathcal P}_1\) of \(\Lambda\)-modules is closed under taking indecomposable submodules. The main result of the paper asserts that for a connected algebra \(\Lambda\) in \({\mathcal H}_1\) the following conditions are equivalent: (a) the modules in \(\bigcup_{n\in\mathbb{N}_0}{\mathcal P}_n\) form a postprojective component, (b) \(\Lambda\) is not a radical square zero algebra with the ordinary quiver \(\widetilde\mathbb{A}_n\) cyclically oriented (or equivalently: it is not a non-semisimple selfinjective radical square zero algebra). The paper is finished by examples showing that \({\mathcal H}_1\) in the assumptions cannot be replaced by \({\mathcal H}_n\) for any \(n\geq 2\).
