The authors are concerned with the implementation of operators (convolution operators, pseudospectral operators) via filter banks. The method can be thought of as an alternative to the nonstandard-form approach by the first author, \textit{R. R. Coifman} and \textit{V. Rokhlin} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 44, No. 2, 141-183 (1991; Zbl 0722.65022)]. The construction is illustrated both with respect to orthogonal wavelets and autocorrelation wavelets but may be applied to any wavelet decomposition associated with quadrature mirror filters with several vanishing moments. If the associated scaling function has also vanishing moments the algorithm leads to a fast method for computing the Hilbert transform of signals. This is for example the case for the autocorrelation wavelets derived by \textit{N. Saito} and the first author [IEEE Trans. Signal Process. 41, No. 12, 3584-3590 (1993; Zbl 0841.94019)].
