A ring is called an \(I\)-ring, if and only if each non-nil right ideal contains an idempotent. The authors provide several geometric characterizations of \(C^*\)-algebras which are \(I\)-rings. For instance, a \(C^*\)-algebra is an \(I\)-ring if and only if its norm is strongly subdifferentiable on a dense subset.
