The paper studies approximation of tensors of order three or higher by sums of vector products. For third-order tensors, a scheme called 3-way ACA based on a generalization of the adaptive cross approximation (ACA) is presented that does not require all the entries of the tensor to be available. Extensive analysis of the scheme is presented. A generalization to higher-order tensors is discussed. Numerical experiments compare the new approach e.g. with the Tucker decomposition and the tensor train decomposition. Approximations of eigenvalues of tensors based on the new method are also discussed.
