Let \(G\) be a finite \(p\)-solvable group, \(P\) a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\), and \(N=N_G(P)\). The authors prove that there is a very natural bijection \(*\colon\chi\mapsto\chi^*\) between the irreducible constituents of \(p'\)-degree of the principal projective character \(\Phi_{1_G}\) of \(G\) and those of \(\Phi_{1_N}\): \(\chi^*\) is the unique \(p'\)-degree irreducible constituent of \(\chi_N\). If furthermore \(P\) is self-normalizing, then the bijection \(*\) specializes to the bijection between the irreducible characters of \(p'\)-degree of \(G\) and those of \(P\), constructed earlier by the second author [in J. Algebra 269, No. 2, 589-598 (2003; Zbl 1037.20007)] and establishing the McKay conjecture for this class of finite groups.
