A generalization of Dwork's trace formula is obtained by enlarging the space on which Frobenius operates (fractional power series are considered not only entire power series). This generalization allows one to treat in a straightforward manner exponential sums involving both additive and multiplicative characters. As an example a new proof of the Gross-Koblitz formula is given.
