In this paper written in a very personal style, we witness the evolutive vision of a scientist, J. E. Ericksen, confronted to the problem of building a theory of crystalline twinning in agreement with both microscopic observations (X-ray ones) and macroscopic observations made with optical methods. The main purpose is therefore to build a continuum theory of X-ray observations as a macroscopic theory, dealing with lattice-vector and shift fields, and avoiding the use of Cauchy-Born rule which \textit{G. Zanzotto} [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 121, No. 1, 1-36 (1992; Zbl 0781.73005)] has proved to fail in this case. In doing so the author shows that the notion of reference configuration is not so relevant. Attention is focused on compound twins and other types, but illustrations pertain to specific cases. Very often the author compares his formulation with those of his previous students and/or disciples, essentially M. Pitteri and G. Zanzotto.
