The existence of positive symmetric solutions to the following semilinear elliptic problem with double-power nonlinearity is established: \[ -\Delta u + V(|y|)u = f(u), \quad u \in D^{1,2}(\mathbb R^N), \] where the potential \(V\) can be singular and satisfies \(V \in L^1(a,b)\) for some \(0<a<b<\infty\). The nonlinearity is such that \[ |f(s)| \leq C\left(|s|^{q-1}\chi_I(s) + |s|^{p-1}\chi_{I^c}(s)\right), \] for some \(C > 0\) and \(2 < p < 2^* < q\), with \(I=[-1,1]\). The Mountain Pass Theorem is applied to deduce the existence of a positive radial solution. Infinitely many positive radial solutions are obtained if in addition \(f\) is odd. The cylindrical case \((y,z) \in \mathbb R^k\times \mathbb R^{N-k}\) with \(N \geq k+3 \geq 6\) is also considered, and the existence of a positive solution \(u(y,z)=u(|y|,|z|)\) is obtained. This is done by minimizing the Euler functional equation on the Nehari manifold. To this aim, the compact embedding of a suitable subspace of \(D^{1,2}(\mathbb R^N)\) in \((L^p + L^q)(\mathbb R^N)\) is established.
