The authors discuss a numerical method for the solution of the elliptic partial integro-differential equation \[ \Delta_z u(z,t) + \int_0^t ( f(t,s) \partial^2 u(z,s) / \partial x^2 + g(t,s) \partial^2 u(z,s) / \partial y^2) ds + k(z,t) = 0 \] where \(z = (x,y)\) is the space variable. The equation is considered in connection with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a rectangular space domain and for \(t\) in some finite closed interval. The numerical method is based on a combination of a high order finite element method and a finite volume approach. A theoretical analysis of the algorithm is given, and numerical examples confirm the theoretical findings.
