This research monograph presents recent mathematical results in the field of turbulent dynamical systems. The general mathematical framework of dynamical systems for complex systems is given, illustrated with different prototype examples typically encountered in geophysics, i.e., in climate, atmosphere and ocean science. Statistical prediction and uncertainty quantification are addressed and data assimilation is discussed. Model errors resulting from approximations of dynamical systems are also considered. New statistical energy principles for general turbulent dynamical systems are introduced. Linear statistical response theory is combined with tools from information theory to study modeling errors and to develop low order reduced models. Numerous references are cited. The book is certainly of some interest for graduate students and researchers in the field of mathematical modeling of geophysical flows.
