Let \(H\) be a second maximal (i.e. maximal of a maximal) subgroup of the alternating group \(G=A_n\) which is intransitive. It is proved in the main theorem of the paper that \(H\) is abnormal in \(G\) if and only if \(H\) is equal to its normalizer. It is known that a corresponding theorem holds for finite solvable groups \(G\) but fails in the case of non-solvable \(G\), see \textit{A. Feldman} [Arch. Math. 70, No. 1, 9-10 (1998; Zbl 0902.20007)].
