From the author's introduction: Let \(G\) denote a group written multiplicatively, and let \(V\) denote an Abelian group written additively. The equation \[ F(x,y)+ F(xy,z)= F(x,yz)+ F(y,z) \] for \(F: G\times G\to V\) is called the 2-cocycle equation. On the one hand (functional equations theory), the general solution of the 2-cocycle equation on Abelian groups is known without assuming any regularity of the unknown function \(F\). On the other hand (amenable groups, quantum theory), results are obtained only after making additional regularity assumptions about \(F\) and requiring the values of \(F\) to lie in \(\mathbb{R}\) or \(\mathbb{C}\). The main result of this article is the determination of the general solution (with no regularity assumption) of the 2-cocycle equation on all solvable groups which can be built up by a series of splitting extensions.
