Loosely speaking, a phononic crystal is composed of periodic heterostructures involving at least two different materials. The dimension of the phononic crystal is defined by the number of periodicities so involved. The study of phononic crystals refers to condensed matter, electronic and photonic band structures and phonons in crystal lattice. This topic is rather new and the purpose of the author herein is exactly to propose a handbook which runs from basic physics to potential applications. The book comprises three main parts; I, (background on) acoustic waves in sonic crystals, necessary for the self-containing of the book; II, elastic waves in phononic crystals (overview of the theory of elastic waves in solids) and III, wave phenomena in phononic crystals (with a theory of domain decomposition method to deal with heterostructure). The theoretical framework is engineering mathematics, and the book is easy to read.
