For a finitely generated group \(G\), denote by \(s_n^ \triangleleft(G)\) the number of normal subgroups of index \(n\). The authors prove that \(s_n^\triangleleft(G)\) is of type \(n^{\log n}\) for a large class of groups \(G\), i.e., there are positive constants \(c_1,c_2\) such that for \(n\) sufficiently large we have \(n^{c_1\log n}\leq s_n^ \triangleleft(G)\leq n^{c_2\log n}\). On the other hand the authors show that for almost all \(n\), the inequality \(s_n^\triangleleft(G)<n^{r-1+\varepsilon}\) holds for every \(r\)-generated group \(G\).
