The main result is a characterization of those abelian groups which are cyclic projective over their endomorphism ring \(E\). The authors also establish a Morita connection between these groups, and those which are finitely generated projective over \(E\). Groups which are cyclic projective over \(E\) form a class which is structurally as complicated as the class of all abelian groups. Thus the main interest of the paper is not in the results, but in the methods. In particular, the authors construct for groups \(G\) which are cyclic over \(E\) a distinguished subgroup \(K\) which admits a ring acting on \(G\). Then \(G\) is projective precisely when \(K\) is an \(E\)-ring. It should be noted that this paper, which is part of the first author's PhD dissertation, appears 9 years after submission.
