The authors study nonlinear baroclinic waves under the influence of stratification and rotation. They proceed from the three-dimensional nonhydrostatic Euler-Boussinesq equations, expanding them in Craya-Herring cyclic basis and restricting to dominant waves and their nonlinear interaction. The regimes of balanced stratification and rotation as well as the regime of dominating stratification are investigated. The authors also discuss mechanisms of frontogenesis through nonlinear wave interaction.
