A topological space is called a \(\mu\)-space if it can be embedded in the product of countably many paracompact spaces each of which is the union of countably many closed, metrizable subspaces. Several interesting characterizations of stratifiable \(\mu\)-spaces are given by \textit{H. Junnila} and the author in Topology Appl. 21, 51-58 (1985; Zbl 0577.54027), but the question whether each stratifiable \((T_ 1)\)-space is a \(\mu\)-space is left open. The author obtains new characterizations of the class of stratifiable \(\mu\)-spaces. His work is based on his notion of an M-structure [Topology Appl. 17, 63-89 (1984; Zbl 0536.54017)]. His main result is related to a characterization of stratifiable \((T_ 1)\)-spaces in terms of collections of continuous real-valued functions with continuous sups that is due to \textit{C. R. Borges} and \textit{G. Gruenhage} [Pac. J. Math. 105, 279-284 (1983; Zbl 0521.54015)].
