The author investigates thinnest lattice coverings of Euclidean \(n\)-space \(E^ n\), which is known for \(n\leq 5\). In these cases the optimal lattice is \(A^*_ n\), the dual of the root lattice \(A_ n\). For all \(n>24\) covering lattices are known, which are better than \(A^*_ n\). So the cases \(6\leq n\leq 23\) are open. The author shows that in \(E^ 9\) \(A^*_ n\) is not optimal and gives a slightly better lattice. Related results in \(E^ 7\) are given.
