Classical approximation spaces were defined by \textit{A. Pietsch} [J. Approximation Theory 32, 115-134 (1981; Zbl 0489.47008)] in the following way. Let \(\{A_n\}\) be a sequence of subsets of a quasi-normed space \(X\) such that: (1) \(\{0\}=A_ 0\subset A_ 1 \subset A_ 2\subset...\); (2) \(\lambda A_ n\subset A_ n\), \(\lambda \in \mathbf K\), \(n\in\mathbf N\); (3) \(A_ n+A_ m\subset A_ {n+m}\). For \(f\in X\) let \(E_ n^ X(f)=\) dist\((f,A_ n)\) and \[ A^ s_ q(X)=\{f\in X : \|f\|_ {s,q} =\|\{(n+1)^ {s-1/q}E_ n^ X(f)\}_ {n=0}^ \infty\|_ q < \infty\}, \] where \(0<s< \infty\), \(0<q\leq \infty\), and \(\|\cdot\|_ q\) denotes the \(\ell^ q\)-norm. The author consider generalizations of these spaces for a quasi-normed sequence space \(S\) satisfying some appropriate conditions, and condition (3) from above replaced by (4) \(A_ n+A_ n \subset A_ {K(n)}\), for a sequence \(\{K(n)\}\) of integers satisfying \(K(0) =0\), \(n\leq K(n)\leq K(n+1)\). The paper is concerned mainly with the case of weighted spaces \(S=\ell^ q(\{b_ b\})\) and \(A(X,\ell^ q(\{b_ b\})) =\{f\in X : \{b_ nE_ n^ X(f)\}\in \ell ^ q\}\). This general scheme covers a lot of situations as nonlinear approximation, multivariate nonlinear approximation, non-classical approximation with application to Cauchy singular integral equations, non-classical Besov-type spaces. The generalized approximation spaces were used by \textit{J. M. Almira} and the author [Numer. Funct. Anal. Optimization 23, No. 1-2, 1-38 (2002; Zbl 1076.41020)], to give compactness criteria in Sobolev-type spaces and in \(L^ p\)-spaces of vector functions. In the present paper the author gives characterizations of these spaces and extends to this setting the representation, reiteration and interpolation theorems, proved by A. Pietsch in the case of classical approximation spaces. He shows also that the generalized approximation spaces can be viewed as interpolation spaces, defined with K-functionals, between couples of quasi-normed spaces satisfying some Jackson- and Bernstein-type inequalities.
