For \(R>0\), let \(B^2_R\) be the Bernstein, or Paley-Wiener, space. In this paper, the space \(B^2_R\) is characterized in different ways: by the usual classical Paley-Wiener growth estimates in the complex plane, by Bernstein inequalities using derivatives or differences, by \(L_ p\)-growth properties of iterated derivatives or differences, and by support properties of the Fourier image. The author also establishes Paley-Wiener theorems for the Fourier series of a function on the circle. Let \(0 < R\leq\pi\). Assume \(f\in L_1(-\pi,\pi)\). Then \(f\) has support in \([-R, R]\) if and only if \(\widehat{f}\) extends to an entire function of exponential type \(R\). The discrete versions presented in this paper, using difference operators instead of derivatives and considering \(l_ p\)-sequences and Fourier series of periodic functions, are believed to be new.
