The authors establish the rigorous relationship between the critical spectrum of the Allen-Cahn equation in the two-dimensional case and a certain eigenvalue problem. This problem contains an explicitly computable function which the authors call the potential. The geometric nature of the potential in terms of the layered solutions with the localized diffused interfaces is discussed. The Allen-Cahn, Cahn-Hilliard, and phase-field potentials are counted.
