A new type of variational boundary element formulation is derived for linear static piezoelectricity based on a well-known in the literature modified hybrid variational principle. By a proper arrangement, the system of governing equations for piezoelectricity is expressed in terms of boundary displacements and electric potential. The results without any numerical applications are stated using the finite element method. This note which overlooks some pioneering works on the boundary element formulation in piezoelectricity [e.g., \textit{K. Tanaka} and \textit{M. Tanaka}, Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 31, 568-580 (1980; Zbl 0459.73076)] may be of some value to researchers dealing with numerical analysis of static linear piezoelectric problems.
