The paper deals with a hyperbolic system with relaxation \[ u_t+f(u,v)_x=0,\quad v_t+ g(u,v)_x= h(u,v).\tag{1} \] The author studies the behaviour of smooth traveling wave solutions of (1) which propagate at subcharacteristic speeds. The existence of such waves has been proven by \textit{T.-P. Liu} [Commun. Math. Phys., 108, 153-175 (1987; Zbl 0633.35049)], who also proved that under certain conditions these traveling waves are nonlinearly stable with respect to initial disturbances. In the present paper, the author uses the method of Kawashima-Matsumura in order to refine the results of Liu and also to establish the decay rate of the solutions.
