The authors study the vanishing behavior of the homology of the Schur complexes \(L_\lambda\phi\), associated to a partition \(\lambda\) and an \(R\)-linear map \(\phi\colon G\to F\) between finitely generated free \(R\)-modules, where \(\text{rank }F-\text{rank }G\) is nonnegative and \(R\) is a commutative noetherian ring. An acyclicity criterion that generalizes the one given by Akin and Buchsbaum and that includes, as a special case, a result of Avramov is given.
