Recently the authors [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. India, Sect. A 55, 30-42 (1985)] have obtained the self-similar solution of the unsteady incompressible laminar three-dimensional boundary layer flow near an asymmetric stagnation point in the absence of the magnetic field. The aim of the present investigation is to extend the foregoing analysis to include the effect of the magnetic field. Both nodal and saddle points regions have been considered in the analysis. The governing self-similar equations have been solved numerically using a shooting method. The motivation for studying the stagnation region of blunt bodies is that at high speeds, all bodies are blunt-nosed to some extend in order to reduce the heat transfer rates to manageable proportions and to allow for internal heat conduction. Also, the maximum local heat transfer rate, in most cases occurs in the vicinity of the forward stagnation point. In such a situation, it is possible to control the flow and heat transfer by the use of the magnetic field since the high stagnation temperature encountered behind the bow shock of the body sufficiently ionizes the air so that it is electrically conducting.
