Let \(C\) be a smooth complex curve of positive genus and \(f: \tilde{C} \to C\) a cyclic covering of degree \(d\), unramified or ramified of degree \(d\) in all critical points. The authors classify all cases (six families) in which the associated Prym map is dominant and generically finite. In all such cases, the covering degree is one of the primes \(2,3,7\), thus correcting a previous claim by \textit{C. Faber} [Math. Z. 199, No. 1, 61--79 (1988; Zbl 0628.14034)].
