Let \(f: \mathbb P^2\to \mathbb P^2 \) be a holomorphic self-map of degree \(d\) on the projective space. Assume that \(f\) is strongly hyperbolic on its nonwandering set \(\Omega\). The authors introduce some invariants and measures describing the dynamics of \(f\). The set \(\Omega=S_0\cup S_1\cup S_2\), where the unstable dimension of \(S_j\) is \(j\). The set \(S_1\) decomposes further into a finite number of basic sets, \(S_1=\cup_k S_1^k\). In an earlier paper [Complex dynamics in higher dimension. II, Ann. Math. Stud. 137, 135-182 (1995; Zbl 0847.58059)] the authors proved that the Julia set is the support of a positive current \(T\). It is proved here that if \(S_1^j\) is minimal then the restriction of \(T\) on the stable set \(W^s(S_1^j)\) of \(S_1^j\) is laminar. The authors describe the structure of a positive closed \( (1, 1)\) current \(\sigma\) satisfying the functional equation \(f_\ast \sigma = d\sigma\) and with support \(\overline{W^u(S_1^j)}\), where \(W^u(S_1^j)\) is the unstable set of \(S_1^j\). It is further proved that \(\nu= T\wedge \sigma\) is an invariant probability measure with support \(S_1^j\) and \(f\) is mixing with respect to \(\nu\).
