If f: \(S\to S\) is a continuous self-map on a compact solvmanifold S, we show that \(| L(f)| \leq N(f)\), where N(f) is the Nielsen number of f and L(f) is the Lefschetz number of f. The proof proceeds by fibering S over a torus, with a compact nilmanifold as the fiber. This fibration can be chosen so that f is homotopic to a fiber-preserving map. Using this fibration, the Nielsen number and Lefschetz number are computed in terms of the corresponding quantities on the fiber and base. This, together with the theorem of Anosov that Nielsen numbers and Lefschetz numbers are equal up to sign on nilmanifolds, yields the inequality. It also provides necessary conditions and sufficient conditions in terms of \(\pi_ 1(S)\) and \(f_{\#}\) for the equality \(N(f)=| L(f)|\) to hold on solvmanifolds.
