Similar and nonsimilar boundary layer equations -- third-order ordinary or partial differential equations -- are considered. The basic principle of the method is the reduction of the third-order to a second-order problem introducing the first derivative of the solution as a new variable. The derivatives are replaced by finite differences and the necessary integration is realized by the iterated trapezoidal rule. Using a few examples (parallel flow over a flat plate, flow past a wedge) the method for similar boundary layer equations is discussed (a MATLAB program is given). Using applicable examples the extension of the method to time-dependent and nonsimilar boundary layer equations is shown.
