The aim of this paper is to find out under which conditions on a Fréchet space Newton's method converges. The hypothesis of existence of smoothing operators is replaced by the weaker assumption of existence of generalized smoothing operators. For Fréchet spaces admitting such generalized smoothing operators an inverse function theorem of the Nash-Moser type is proved. In particular, for Köthe sequence spaces, property \((\Omega )\) and the topological condition \((DN)\) are shown to be sufficient for the Nash-Moser theorem to hold under classical assumptions on the mappings.
