This paper introduces the notion of a \((\mathfrak{B,M})\)-cotorsion pair where \(\mathfrak B\) and \(\mathfrak M\) are classes of \(R\)-modules; this is a generalization of a notion introduced by \textit{L. Salce} [Symp. Math. 23, 11-32 (1979; Zbl 0426.20044)]. A pair \((\mathcal{V,W})\) of classes of modules is defined to be a \((\mathfrak{B,M})\)-cotorsion pair if \({\mathcal V}\subseteq\mathfrak B\), \({\mathcal W}\subseteq\mathfrak M\), \({\mathcal V}=\{X\in{\mathfrak B}:\text{Ext}_R^1(X,Y)=0\) for all \(Y\in{\mathcal W}\}\) and \({\mathcal W}=\{Y\in{\mathfrak M}:\text{Ext}_R^1(X,Y)=0\) for all \(X\in{\mathcal V}\}\). The notion is of interest only if \((\mathfrak{B,M})\) is not a cotorsion pair in the sense of Salce. Several examples from Abelian groups are studied, most notably that when \({\mathfrak B}=\mathfrak M\) is the class of torsion-free groups of finite rank.
