The book presents ``a certain point of view regarding the application of large deviation theory to queueing problems''. With this end, it uses the ``continuous mapping'' approach which helps to give an introduction to rare-scaling phenomena in queueing theory. The book consists of the following chapters: 1. The single server queue. 2. Large deviations in Euclidean spaces. 3. More on the single server queue. 4. Introduction to abstract large deviations. 5. Continuous queueing maps. 6. Large-buffer scalings. 7. Many-flows scalings. 8. Long range dependence. 9. Moderate deviations scalings. 10. Interpretations.
