Let \(G\) be a compact simply connected simple Lie group and \(\tau\) an automorphism of \(G\). The \(\tau\)-twisted conjugacy classes of \(G\) are the orbits of the action of \(G\) on itself given by \(g: h \to g h \tau(g^{-1})\). In the present paper the authors study twisted and untwisted conjugacy classes of \(G\) which satisfy a certain integrability condition, which appears in the classification of \(D\)-branes in the Wess-Zumino-Witten model. They show that there exists a natural correspondence between untwisted respectively twisted conjugacy classes of \(G\) which satisfy the integrability condition and irreducible highest weight representations of the corresponding affine Lie algebra. In order to prove this correspondence, they obtain a description of the set of twisted conjugacy classes of \(G\) as a convex polytope in a Euclidean space whose faces of maximal dimension are in one-to-one correspondence with the vertices a certain twisted affine Dynkin diagram. Moreover, they show how to compute the stabilizers of the twisted conjugacy classes in terms of the Dynkin diagram of the corresponding twisted affine Lie algebra.
