The author's goal is to connect the two points of view for the Deligne- Mumford stable curve compactification \(\bar M_ g\) of the classical moduli space of Riemann surfaces. First, this is constructed by the methods of algebraic geometry and, second, it is possible to define the compactification via 2-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. Namely, the author analyzes the degeneration of an invariant of hyperbolic metrics by simply writing out its expansion in complex coordinates and uses the hyperbolic metric in the study of the geometry of \(\bar M_ g\) (which is actually the Weil-Peterson geometry).
