This paper presents a stochastic environment life history model with lottery density regulation as an example for these phenomena. Environmental stochasticity generally leads to frequency dependence in a density regulated population, for the established strategy determines the distribution of resource abundance (the number of available living sites in the lottery model), which in turn influences the long run growth of a strategy invading the established population. Due to this frequency dependence, we can find ESSs lacking the other features of an optimal strategy as well as multiple ESSs with dependence on history.
