The author proves a conjecture of \textit{M. Gromov} [made in Geometric group theory. Vol. 2: Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups. Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 182 (1993; Zbl 0841.20039)], which states that the asymptotic cone of a group satisfying a quadratic isoperimetric inequality is simply connected. The paper contains also a quick introduction to Gromov's theory of asymptotic cones.
