The author formulates Freiling's axioms of symmetry [\textit{C. Freiling}, ``Axioms of symmetry: Throwing darts at the real line'', J. Symb. Log. 51, 190-200 (1986; Zbl 0619.03035)] for general second-order structures with respect to a certain ideal of small sets contained in them and finds several equivalence formulations of the principles. The author considers saturated and recursively saturated models and shows that they are symmetric with respect to appropriate classes of small sets when their second-order part consists of definable sets. Some asymmetric models are also exhibited.
