An age structured model for erythropoiesis (blood cell production and development) is given. Using the method of characteristics, the model is replaced by a delay differential equation for the total number of mature cells. Existence and uniqueness are proved for this new system. Finite element method is used to investigate it. Finally, optimal control is used to find the total number of mature cells and the number of proliferating precurser cells.
