A closed set in the Riemann sphere with at least 3 points is called uniformly perfect if there exists a constant \(0<c<1\) such that \(C \cap \{z \in \mathbb C : cr<|z-a|<r\} \neq \emptyset\) for any \(a\in\mathbb C\) and \(0<r<\operatorname {diam} C\), where \(\text{diam}\) denotes the Euclidean diameter. \textit{R. Mãné} and \textit{L. F. Da Rocha} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 116, No. 1, 251-257 (1992; Zbl 0763.30010)] and \textit{A.~Hinkkanen} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 113, No. 3, 543-559 (1993; Zbl 0785.30012)] independently proved that the Julia set of a rational function of degree at least \(2\) is uniformly perfect. But since their proofs are done by contradiction there are no explicit bounds for the constant \(c\). In the article under review the author provides such an explicit bound. His method uses hyperbolic geometry, and he obtains a different proof for the uniform perfectness of Julia sets. As an application, the author presents a lower estimate for the Hausdorff dimension of Julia sets. He finally gives a concrete bound for the family of quadratic polynomials \(f_c(z)=z^2+c\) in terms of the parameter \(c\).
