In Donagi's proof of the generic Torelli theorem for projective hypersurfaces [\textit{R. Donagi}, Compos. Math. 50, 325-353 (1983; Zbl 0598.14007)], a key step was the so-called ''symmetrizer lemma'', which asserts the exactness of a certain sequence associated to a generic projective hypersurface. In this paper the authors give a short proof that the lemma holds for an arbitrary smooth projective hypersurface. From this follows a slightly finer version of the generic Torelli theorem.
