The infinitesimal generator \(-B\) of a bounded analytic semigroup on a Banach space \(X\) is said to satisfy maximal regularity (MR) if \(u' \in L^p([0,T);X), 1<p<\infty\) for the solution of the abstract Cauchy problem \( u'+Bu =f\) with \(u(0)=0 , f\in L^p([0,T);X)\). The Banach space \(X\) has the maximal regularity property (MRP) if any \(B\) as above satisfies (MR). The authors of this paper prove that (MRP), up to isomorphism, characterizes Hilbert spaces among separable Banach lattices. They extend also some other previous partial results on the \(L^p\)-maximal regularity problem.
